The first of three prequels to George Lucas’s iconic STAR WARS films, Episode I: The Phantom Menace is set 30 years before Episode IV: A New Hope, during the Republic era. The peaceful planet of Naboo, ruled by the young and wise Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman), faces a threat from the corrupt Trade Federation, controlled by a sinister Sith lord and his menacing apprentice, Darth Maul (Ray Park). Jedi knights Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor, brilliantly mimicking Alec Guinness’s older Obi-Wan) are sent to resolve the trade disputes. Along their journey, they meet young Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), a prodigy destined to become Darth Vader, and the clumsy yet endearing Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), who has been banished from his underwater home. As the Trade Federation attacks Naboo, the queen and her allies must fight against an army of robot troopers, while Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan confront the formidable Darth Maul.
One of the most anticipated films ever, The Phantom Menace sets the stage for the epic events to follow. Lucas fills the screen with intricate sci-fi creatures, stunning locations, and the most creative sets, costumes, and character designs since the original trilogy.
